  • 17 February 00:30 GMT — First case in Africa detected

The first case of the new coronavirus has been reported in Africa — in a person in Egypt. The country’s health ministry and the World Health Organization said on 15 February that the case had been detected as a result of the country’s programme to trace visitors who had come from affected countries. The person had tested positive to the virus but had no symptoms. They are currently being isolated and are in a stable condition.

Researchers have been fearful about the arrival of the virus in Africa, and its potential to spread there.

    • COVID-19 tsunami: the first case of a spinal cord injury patient in Italy Gabriele Righi & Giulio Del Popolo Spinal Cord Series and Cases volume 6, Article number: 22 (2020) Abstract Introduction We present the report of the first, to our best knowledge, case of COVID-19 in a tetraplegic person. Case presentation A 56-year-old male with AIS A C4 tetraplegia developed fever during the night, without any prodrome. His general practitioner suspected a urinary tract infection and prescribed him antibiotic therapy. After 2 days of antibiotic therapy the fever still persisted, so the individual was admitted to the local hospital and treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. After 2 days he was transferred to our spinal unit. Considering the worsening of the chest X-ray and fever despite 48 h of broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, we strongly suspected viral pneumonia. SARS-CoV-2 was detected and antiviral therapy with Lopinavir/Ritonavir, associated with hydroxychloroquine, was promptly started. Fever ceased after 2 days of therapy.

    • Around 1 AM on Friday 28 January 2020, Nigeria announced sub-Saharan Africa’s first confirmed case of the coronavirus disease COVID-19, and the confirmation led to activation of the country’s National Coronavirus Emergency Operation Centre. Nigeria’s quick mobilization of resources and manpower to combat the Ebola virus disease in 2014, led by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), received praise from the international community and from the World Health Organization (WHO). The outbreak, which caused 15,000 confirmed cases and over 9,000 suspected cases in West Africa, was controlled in just 92 days―a “piece of world-class epidemiological detective work,” the WHO stated at the time.
