  • Water resources systems provide multiple services and, if managed properly, can contribute significantly to social well-being and economic growth. However, extreme or unexpected hydroclimatic conditions, such as droughts and floods, can adversely affect or even completely interrupt these services. This manual seeks to provide knowledge, resources and techniques for water resources professionals to manage the risks and opportunities arising from hydroclimatic variability and change. Introduction; Water resources analysis and management; Climate variability and hydrologic predictability; Climate predictability and forecasts; Climate risk management in the water sector; Techniques for using climate information in planning and operations.

    • Water demand in most countries has shown a steady, relentless rise in the past and this has put increasing pressure on water resources globally. This book provides an up-to-date review on new technologies and their application in water supply management, operation, planning and design. Topics include: New concepts in meeting the demand for drinking water; new technologies in pipeline construction and control; new technologes in water treatment; diagnosis of problems in existing water supply networks and new solutions; computer modelling and new techniques in transient flow analysis and valve control.

    • The handbook first examines some of the key areas of vulnerability to climate change within urban water systems. Urban water systems can be affected by most of the predicted climatic changes; for example, droughts can affect water supply directly and indirectly (when vegetation regrowth after wildfires reduces catchment yields), higher temperatures can lead to the deterioration of wastewater pipes and increased heavy rainfall can cause combined sewer overflows. The handbook also proposes flexible and future-oriented urban water planning as a means to address climate change and implement adaptation actions. This can be achieved through strategic planning, which is a continuous, regularly evaluated process with ongoing choices designed to cope with changing circumstances. Finally, the handbook presents case studies of cities throughout the world that have already planned for adaptation or implemented specific actions aiming at increasing their resilience to climate change.
