  • INTRODUCTION A Joint FAO/WHO Expert Consultation on Biotechnology and Food Safety was held in Rome from 30 September to 4 October 1996. The Consultation participants are listed in an annex. The Consultation was opened by Dr. H. de Haen, Assistant Director-General, Economic and Social Department, FAO, who welcomed the participants on behalf of the Directors General of FAO and WHO. In his opening remarks, Dr. de Haen also recognized the participation of, and thanked, the Italian Ministry of Health who had graciously provided the venue for the Consultation, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
