This report draws together and summarises the very substantial amount of consumer research undertaken by the Agency on GM food – both quantitative and qualitative.
This year the UK government decides whether to allow the commercial growing of genetically modified (GM) crops in the UK. It has announced a national public debate and new studies into the science and economics of GM crops. Many consumers feel strongly about the use of GM in food production and want the right to know what they are eating and how it is produced.
In summary, consumers are concerned about the products produced by agricultural biotechnology, but limited knowledge about GM foods makes their views uncertain and malleable.
