  • This work examines the design and operation of a new, small-scale FPE (Free Piston Expander) engine that operates using low temperature waste heat sources to produce useful power output. The FPE is based on a sliding-piston architecture that eliminates challenges associated with MEMS-based rotating systems. A nonlinear lumped-parameter model is derived to study the factors that control the performance of the FPE engine and its unique operating cycle. This basic analysis considers a closed cycle operation of the FPE with low thermal or heat inputs and dimensions on the order of several millimeters. Key system design and operating parameters such as piston mass, external load, and heat input are varied to identify conditions and trends for optimal performance. The model indicated the pressure-volume diagram resembles a constant pressure cycle for a certain set of operating conditions but is also condition dependent. Increased heat inputs to the FPE reduced the engine natural or operating frequency while increasing the power output. Thermal efficiencies of the FPE are shown to be predictably low, on the order of 0.2% due to the small heat input and operating temperature gradients associated with waste heat. Key design features are identified that reveal FPE efficiency, operating frequency, and output power are dependent on piston mass, external load, input heat-rate, and duration of heat input.

(Photo credit: PM) The Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Association (CAMA) has launched a no-fee digital platform that streamlines, simplifies and expedites access to capital for small manufacturers, supporting job growth and economic development in a challenging market environment. The new loan prequalification tool, which is being piloted in Colorado before being introduced in other U.S. markets and industry sectors, was developed by Austin-based Access Capital Technologies, the digital arm of ACTCapital, a nonprofit organization serving community lenders and their small business and start-up clients nationwide. FirstBank, Key Bank and DreamSpring are among the community lenders partnering with CAMA to launch the initiative, noting that the new tool assists their organizations in supporting Colorado’s smaller manufacturing businesses. This new loan prequalification tool is being piloted in Colorado before being introduced in other U.S. markets. One of CAMA’s trusted Banking Partners is FirstBank. Kristen Bernhardt, president of FirstBank’s Northwest Market and a CAMA board member, says the company knows that manufacturers are vital to the U.S. economy, but they often deal with workforce and capital challenges. “We look forward to helping them find solutions to efficiently operate and grow their business and see the access-to-capital program as one of several ways we’re able to accomplish that,” she explains. Edmond Johnson, CMMA member and president and CEO of Premier Manufacturing, brings a new source of funding to Colorado manufacturers. Johnson is also the board chair of DreamSpring, one of the country’s top micro lenders. He believes the collaboration between CAMA and DreamSpring will result in many micro- and small-business manufacturers gaining access to capital — money they can use to advance technology-driven manufacturing in their facilities. Luther Branham, co-founder and managing director of ACTCapital, says this new access-to-capital platform can cut costs for new customer loan origination by nearly 70% and reduce acquisition costs by half, while almost entirely eliminating application rejections. He notes that ATCCapital provides fast access to the best lending product, interest rates and terms through technology that is easily scalable across different organizations. “We’re launching the platform with CAMA and its lending partners and will be adding more industry sectors and programs that support small businesses as we grow, focusing on underserved and often overlooked markets and communities across the United States,” Branham explains. This tool is an exciting first step in helping Colorado’s manufacturers digitize and transform their operations. Interest rates, however, will continue to make it difficult for manufacturers to borrow the funds to pay for these advancements. Recognizing this, CAMA is already working with ACTCapital to launch Phase Two of this access-to-capital tool.     • As a person ages, their circadian clock begins to slow down. But a study of nearly 150 human brains suggests that’s also when a new biological clock kicks in. A 24-hour circadian rhythm controls nearly all brain and body processes, such as the sleep/wake cycle, metabolism, alertness, and cognition. These daily activity patterns are regulated by certain genes that are found in almost all cells, but have rarely been studied in the human brain. “Studies have reported that older adults tend to perform complex cognitive tasks better in the morning and get worse through the day,” says Colleen McClung, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. “We know also that the circadian rhythm changes with aging, leading to awakening earlier in the morning, fewer hours of sleep, and less robust body temperature rhythms.” [How light resets your body clock] In addition, the presence of gene changes or “molecular aging” in the brain had been previously shown by senior co-investigator Etienne Sibille, formerly a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and now chair in clinical neuroscience at the University of Toronto. Both teams decided to look at the effects of normal aging on molecular rhythms in the human prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain involved in learning, memory, and other aspects of cognitive performance. For the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers examined brain samples of 146 people with no history of mental health or neurological problems whose families had donated their remains for medical research and for whom the time of death was known. They categorized the brains depending on whether they had come from a person younger than 40 or older than 60, and used a newly developed statistical technique to analyze two tissue samples from the prefrontal cortex for rhythmic activity, or expression, of thousands of genes. Using the information they had about the time of death, they identified 235 core genes that make up the molecular clock in this part of the brain. “As we expected, younger people had that daily rhythm in all the classic ‘clock’ genes,” McClung says. “But there was a loss of rhythm in many of these genes in older people, which might explain some of the alterations that occur in sleep, cognition, and mood in later life.” [Does life in a group sync circadian clocks?] To their surprise, the team also found a set of genes that gained rhythmicity in older individuals. This information could ultimately be useful in the development of treatments for cognitive and sleep problems that can occur with aging, as well as a possible treatment for “sundowning,” a condition in which older individuals with dementia become agitated, confused, and anxious in the evening. “Since depression is associated with accelerated molecular aging, and with disruptions in daily routines, these results also may shed light on molecular changes occurring in adults with depression,” Sibille says. The researchers will next explore the function of the brain’s circadian-rhythm genes in lab and animal models, as well as see if they are altered in people who have psychiatric or neurological illnesses.
