The Food Guide Pyramid emphasizes foods from the five major food groups shown in the three lower sections of the Pyramid. Choose a variety of foods from each of the major food groups every day. Each of these food groups provides some, but not all, of the nutrients you need. Foods in one group can't replace those in another. Variety is necessary for getting all the nutrients needed for good health. Use caution and choose only small amounts of foods from the tip of the Pyramid.
