The goals of the Tisza River Basin Integrated Sustainable Development Programme are: Identify stakeholders and develop a participatory framework for cooperation between countries, sectors, communities and stakeholders in the river basin Secure prosperity for the people living in the river basin Ensure sustainable use of natural resources Minimize environmental risks Preserve natural and cultural values Recently the Tisza River basin has come to the forefront of international attention because of a sequence of major floods and environmental disasters with the Baia Mare cyanide spill in January 2000 leading the headlines. The five Tisza River countries (Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Yugoslavia and Ukraine) share a common recent history of communist controlled systems and a transition towards democracy and market economy in the last decade.
