  • The Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI) was established in 1976 to manage cooperative research programs for the oceanographic community. The JOI web site offers news items, a listing of member institutions, and links to member institutions and other related web resources. Visitors to this site may also access the home pages of the research programs currently managed by JOI: the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, the Scientific Ocean Drilling Vessel Program, the US Science Support Program, and the Ocean Research Interactive Observatory Networks.

    • The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) web site describes its programs on marine environmental protection, fisheries and ecosystems, climate change, coastal area management, the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), data and information management, and disaster mitigation as well as its regional programs. Topical science theme programs can be found in the IOC Global Ocean Sciences section. Many of these program subsites offer relevant online publications and others can be found in the IOC e-library section of this site. A find-a-scientist service is provided through the OceanExpert database. The OceanTeacher section offers training in developing and maintaining marine data and information systems. The OceanPortal is an extensive virtual library. A glossary of oceanography and related geoscience terms is supplied as well as an acronym dictionary. Information on IOC structure and membership are also available.

    • The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Ocean and Climate Change Institute (OCCI) sponsors observational, theoretical, and modeling studies on ocean-climate interactions. The Institute's web site includes research project summaries; an overview of WHOI facilities and available technology; information on OCCI educational activities (K-12, graduate, and postdoctoral levels); current and past research fellows; and links to related WHOI research projects. The site also features a current topics section with articles related to abrupt climate change, global warming, and ocean-monitoring systems.
