  • DHAKA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has provided emergency food assistance to more than 150,000 people in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, a week after the area was inundated by flash floods.
WFP, in partnership with the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and the Australian Government, has used dozens of boats and trucks to deliver over 100 metric tons of emergency food supplies to the four worst-affected areas of Chakaria, Pekua, Cox’s Badar Sadar and Ramu.
Many of those receiving assistance, which consists of vitamin and mineral-fortified high energy biscuits, have lost their homes, businesses, farms and livelihoods. They are now vulnerable to food insecurity and worsening poverty.
“Flash floods and landslides made the distribution of food very challenging but even remote areas were reached within a matter of hours,” said Christa Räder, WFP Representative in Bangladesh, noting that WFP’s operation appropriately complemented the Government’s emergency response.……

    • KATHMANDU: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) seeks to correct some points published in the news today. WFP has purchased more than 11,000 metric tons of rice for the Nepal earthquake response. Of this, more than 5,000 metric tons has been purchased locally from Nepali suppliers and these purchases are continuing. The remainder that couldn’t be sourced locally was purchased from the State Trading Corporation of India after a tender process. The cost of the rice bought from the State Trading Corporation of India is 34.87 Rs per kilogram, not 0.34 Rs as has been incorrectly reported. WFP works closely with the Ministry of Home Affairs in Nepal. A senior official of the Ministry has been stationed within the WFP-managed interagency Humanitarian Staging Area at the airport since the earthquake response started for the purpose of even closer cooperation and transparency.……

    • BAGHDAD – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is assisting Iraqi families returning to their homes in Garma city in Anbar province, providing over 185 families (925 people) with family food parcels to help them as they rebuild their shattered lives. “Families returning Garma are facing great challenges; much of the city’s infrastructure has been destroyed, while many homes and shops have been burnt during the fighting between Iraqi security forces and militants.  WFP and its local partner are working hard to provide the returning families with the necessary life-saving food assistance they need,” said WFP Representative and Country Director in Iraq Jane Pearce. WFP and its local partner are the first humanitarian organisations able to reach Garma returnees with emergency food assistance after the security situation had made it inaccessible over the past year. The UN food agency aims to provide food assistance for a total of 800 returning families for three months. Each WFP food parcel feeds a family of five for one month and contains essential items such as rice, cooking oil, wheat flour, lentils, pasta and salt.……
