  • The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issues guidance documents for the medical management of HIV infection and other issues surrounding HIV infection. These documents contain technical information useful for health care providers, but patients, friends, and family members are encouraged to review the guidelines and discuss questions with their doctors, nurses, and other members of their health care team. The guideline documents are periodically reviewed and updated by panels of HIV experts. Highlighted and/or bold text indicates the updated material. Please check back often for updates. To review previous versions of the guidelines, please see the guideline archives. You can also join our subscriber list to receive e-mail notification when updated guidelines are released.

    • Background AIDSinfo is a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) project providing information on HIV/AIDS clinical trials and treatment. It is the result of merging two previous DHHS projects: The AIDS Clinical Trials Information Service (ACTIS) and the HIV/AIDS Treatment Information Service (ATIS). AIDSinfo is a central resource for current information on federally and privately funded clinical trials for AIDS patients and others infected with HIV. AIDS clinical trials evaluate experimental drugs and other therapies for adults and children at all stages of HIV infection -- from patients who are HIV positive with no symptoms to those with various symptoms of AIDS. As the main dissemination point for federally approved HIV treatment and prevention guidelines, AIDSinfo provides information about the current treatment regimens for HIV infection and AIDS-related illnesses, including the prevention of HIV transmission from occupational exposure and mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy. Mission Statement To offer the latest federally approved information on HIV/AIDS clinical research, treatment and prevention, and medical practice guidelines for consumers and health care providers. Audience HIV/AIDS patients, their families and friends, health care providers and researchers.

    • When AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) was first recognized in 1981, patients with the disease were unlikely to live longer than a year or two. Since then, scientists have developed an effective arsenal of drugs that can help many people infected with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) live longer and healthier lives. The treatment and prevention of HIV is a high priority for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Research supported by NIAID has greatly advanced our understanding of HIV and how it causes AIDS. This knowledge provides the foundation for NIAID AIDS research effort and continues to support studies designed to further extend and improve the quality of life of those infected with HIV.
