  • Current theories for predicting the sound insulation of orthotropic materials are limited to a small range of infinite panels. This paper presents a method that allows for the prediction of the sound insulation of a finite size orthotropic panel. This method uses an equation for the forced radiation impedance of a finite size rectangular panel. This approach produces an equation that has three nested integrals. The long numerical calculation times were reduced by using approximate formulas for the azimuthally averaged forced radiation impedance. This reduced the number of nested integrals from three to two. The resulting predictions are compared to results measured using two sample sizes of four different thicknesses of plywood and one sample size of another three different thicknesses of plywood. Plywood was used for all the tests because it is somewhat orthotropic. It was found during testing that the Young's moduli of the plywood were dependent on the frequency of excitation. The influence of the frequency dependent Young's moduli was then included in the prediction method. The experimental results were also compared with a simple isotropic prediction method.

    • Performance spaces are characterized by a complex sound field, due to the presence of absorptive and diffusive surfaces. In situ evaluations of the acoustic effects that these surfaces have on the objective acoustic parameters and on sound perception have not yet been fully understood. To this aim, acoustic measurements have been performed in a variable-acoustic concert hall, the Espace de Projection, at the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique. These measurements have allowed the effects of one single wall to be determined. A diffusive and a reflective condition of one of the long lateral walls of the shoebox-like hall have been considered, while the other surfaces have been fixed in absorptive mode. Measurements have been carried out at different distances from the test wall, using an artificial head and an array of omnidirectional microphones. Objective acoustic parameters, such as early decay time, reverberation time (T 30), clarity (C 80), definition (D 50), and interaural cross correlation, have been compared between both conditions. In addition to the objective indexes, a perceptual evaluation has been performed using listening tests that had the purpose of determining the maximum distance from a diffusive surface at which acoustic scatteringeffects are still audible.
  • 《Low-frequency temporary threshold shift not observed in spotted or ringed seals exposed to single air gun impulsesa》

    • Underwater hearing thresholds were measured at 100 Hz in trained spotted (Phoca largha) and ringed seals (Pusa hispida) before and immediately following voluntary exposure to impulsive noise from a seismic air gun. Auditory responses were determined from psychoacoustic data and behavioral responses were scored from video recordings. Four successive exposure conditions of increasing level were tested, with received unweighted sound exposure levels from 165 to 181 dB re 1 μPa2 s and peak-to-peak sound pressures from 190 to 207 dB re 1 μPa. There was no evidence that these single seismic exposures altered hearing—including in the highest exposure condition, which matched previous predictions of temporary threshold shift (TTS) onset. Following training at low exposure levels, relatively mild behavioral responses were observed for higher exposure levels. This demonstrates that individuals can learn to tolerate loud, impulsive sounds, but does not necessarily imply that similar sounds would not elicit stronger behavioral responses in wild seals. The absence of observed TTS confirms that regulatory guidelines (based on M-weighting) for single impulse noise exposures are conservative for seals. However, additional studies using multiple impulses and/or higher exposure levels are needed to quantify exposure conditions that do produce measurable changes in hearing sensitivity.
