  • The federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) Amendments of 1996 required states to develop and implement Source Water Assessment Programs (SWAP) to analyze existing and potential threats to the quality of the public drinking water throughout the state. Source water is the groundwater or surface water that provides drinking water for a public water system.Nevada’s Source Water Assessment Program consists of a 4 step program.

    • South Dakota will make the results of the source water assessments available to the public. A number of different formats and options will be available to the public to receive this information. Information derived from the assessments will include a delineated source water area around the well field or surface water intake, an inventory of potential contaminant sources, and an analysis of the susceptibility of the public water supply to contaminant sources in the delineated zone. These assessment results will be presented in both a brief narrative describing the overall system assessment and susceptibility results, and maps showing the delineated zone, contaminant source inventory, and susceptibility rating.

    • The state is to ensure the following requirements have been met for each federally regulated public drinking water system: 1) Delineate source water protection area(s) (SWPA) for each source (well, spring, surface water intake). 2) Inventory each SWPA for potential contaminant sources. 3) Conduct a susceptibility assessment for each drinking water source. 4) Make the findings of 1-3 readily available to interested parties.
