《The role of compression in the simultaneous masker phase effecta》

  • Peripheral compression is believed to play a major role in the masker phase effect (MPE). While compression is almost instantaneous, activation of the efferent system reduces compression in a temporally evolving manner. To study the role of efferent-controlled compression in the MPE, in experiment 1, simultaneous masking of a 30-ms 4-kHz tone by 40-ms Schroeder-phase harmonic complexes was measured with on- and off-frequency precursors as a function of masker phase curvature for two masker levels (60 and 90 dB sound pressure level). The MPE was quantified by the threshold range [min/max difference (MMD)] across the phase curvatures. For the 60-dB condition, the presence of on-frequency precursor decreased the MMD from 10 to 5 dB. Experiment 2 studied the role of the precursor on the auditory filter's bandwidth. The on-frequency precursor was found to increase the bandwidth, an effect incorporated in the subsequent modeling. A model of the auditory periphery including cochlear filtering and basilar membrane compression generally underestimated the MMDs. A model based on two-step compression, including compression of inner hair cells, accounted for the MMDs across precursor and level conditions. Overall, the observed precursor effects and the model predictions suggest an important role of compression in the simultaneous MPE.

    • Similarity between target and competing speech messages plays a large role in how easy or difficult it is to understand messages of interest. Much research on informational masking has used highly aligned target and masking utterances that are very similar semantically and syntactically. However, listeners rarely encounter situations in real life where they must understand one sentence in the presence of another (or more than one) highly aligned, syntactically similar competing sentence(s). The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of syntactic/semantic similarity of target and masking speech in different spatial conditions among younger, middle-aged, and older adults. The results of this experiment indicate that differences in speech recognition between older and younger participants were largest when the masker surrounded the target and was more similar to the target, especially at more adverse signal-to-noise ratios. Differences among listeners and the effect of similarity were much less robust, and all listeners were relatively resistant to masking, when maskers were located on one side of the target message. The present results suggest that previous studies using highly aligned stimuli may have overestimated age-related speech recognition problems.

    • In the absence of surplus ions adsorbed on, or coordinating with, the freshly prepared pure ZrO 2 , the products are expected to attain a higher purity level compared to the other two variants. Consequently, morphological characterization was conducted on the sample synthesized under neutral conditions, as illustrated in SEM images in Figure 4 . Insights from Figure 4 reveal that the minute particles feature a relatively narrow size distribution. However, several agglomerates with an average diameter of approximately 400 nm are also discernible. This phenomenon can be ascribed to the vast surface area and surface free energy of the nanoparticles. The exceedingly large values of these two parameters invariably result in the agglomeration of nano-scale particles to minimize their surface energy.
