  • In July, Justice Roland Haines released a review of meat inspection in Ontario.Doug participated in the process by sitting on Justice Haines' expert committee and preparing a paper analyzing the media's role in risk communication surrounding meat inspection. Many of the FSN's objectives were echoed by Justice Haines including a farm-to-fork food safety system that is based on risk and supported by evidence. In July, the listservs reached 11,553 subscribers, the most since the service began in 1996. 96 per cent of participants receive the HTML version with just over 460 receiving the text lists.

    • In January, five FSN members received acceptance to present their research at the International Association for Food Protection's annual meeting in Phoenix this August: Katija Blaine -- Design and evaluation of an agricultural worker training video Ben Chapman -- Evaluation of daily food safety summary sheet for employees Lisa Mathiasen -- Evaluation of retail employee messages Stacey Smith -- Integrating nutrient management and on-farm food safety Brae Surgeoner -- Assessment of food safety messages on take-out food packages Doug participated in 24 interviews in January, primarily on BSE, but also general food safety, and produce food safety. Doug and former FSN grad student Justin Kastner were quoted in the January 26th issue of Maclean's.
