NIWA was established in 1992 as one of nine New Zealand Crown Research Institutes (CRIs), with the mission of providing a scientific basis for the sustainable management and development of New Zealand’s atmospheric, marine and freshwater systems and associated resources. NIWA is split into several centres (Climate Centre for Monitoring and Prediction, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Climate–Energy Solutions, Water Resources, Aquatic Biodiversity and Biosecurity, Natural Hazards Centre). In addition to details of NIWA and its activities, the NIWA website provides online data services, full text newsletters and magazines, and paid data services.
