  • The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) was established on 27 April 1955, and is located on the Waite Campus of The University of Adelaide in Urrbrae, South Australia. The decision to locate the Institute's buildings on the Campus showed great vision, as the Institute is part of an internationally-recognised research cluster; including three divisions of CSIRO, South Australian Research and Development Institute, Primary Industries and Resources South Australia, the School of Science (Adelaide University), Provisor, Australian Genome Research Facility, Australian Centre for Plan Functional Genomics, CRC for Molecular Plant Breeding and BioInnovation SA. The Institute formally affiliated with The University of Adelaide in 1991 and the Australian Wine Industry Chair of Oenology was established. The Director of the Institute currently holds the Chair. The Institute is governed by a Council, which comprises six members elected by the Australian wineries and grapegrowers who pay The Wine Grape Levy and The Grape Research Levy; the Director of the Institute (ex-officio) and a representative each from The University of Adelaide, Charles Sturt University and CSIRO Division of Plant Industry. The Institute is totally accountable to its industry-led governing body, and to its main investor, the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation (GWRDC).

    • Whenever we think of the CFTRI- Mysore association, we also need to remember Mr. K.C. Reddy, the then Chief Minister of Mysore and Dr. V. Subrahmanyan the founder-director of CFTRI—the duo which made this association possible. Apart from the prize offer of Cheluvamba Mansion, what tilted CFTRI’s location decision in favour of Mysore were, among other things, the city’s facilities for water and power, equable climate, academic environment (thanks largely to the University of Mysore), proximity to the IISc and the R&D strengths of Bangalore, and proximity to the Nutrition Research Laboratories at Coonoor. Also, the city being at the convergence of regions noted for rice, millets, tuber crops and fruits & vegetables influenced the location decision. Over the last five decades, Mysore and CFTRI have grown so much, independently as well as mutually, that the founders’ hopes on the location of the institute stand wholly justified today.
