《CFP: 41st Annual Meeting of the Social Science History Association》

    Call for papers

    Interdisciplinary historical studies have changed dramatically in the forty year history of the Social Science History Association. Twenty-first century research crosses disciplinary boundaries with an ease that was unthinkable in 1976, bringing new insights into how people lived in the past, what they experienced and thought, and how they were creative.

    In recognition of the opportunities we have to expand our knowledge and understanding of socio-historical phenomena in ways that that integrate information, data, techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts, and theories from the physical and biological sciences, literature, the arts, technology, and medicine, the 2016 Program Committee seeks panel and paper proposals with the broadest possible perspectives on the past. These papers and panels may consider the myriad ways that history, culture, law, economy, demography, education, knowledge production, geography, migration, religion, sexuality, and politics engage with phenomena known to the sciences, medicine, literature and the arts, broadly conceived.

    The 2016 Program Committee also welcomes, as always, individual papers and panels on all aspects of social science history (see the list of network organizers for the range of topics regularly engaged by conference panels).

    Starting on December 1, 2015, proposals for individual papers and complete sessions will be accepted at http://ssha.org, which provides instructions for submission. The deadline is February 20, 2016. We prefer the submission of complete sessions. If you plan to organize a session, we recommend that you first contact a network representative. Network representatives, who are open to all possibilities, screen all papers and panels in their areas. (Current networks, with their representatives’ email and web addresses, are listed on the SSHA website.) If you are not certain which network your paper proposal best fits, just ask the representative of the networks closest to your interests.

    SSHA will continue to make competitive grants for graduate student travel.

Book panel ("Author meets Critics") proposals are also warmly welcomed.

    • Thursday to Sunday, January 5-8, 2017, in Denver, Colorado as a part of the annual meeting of the American Historical Association (AHA). The theme for the ASCH 2017 annual meeting is “Reformations.” We welcome proposals that commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformations and also those that examine early modern Catholic reforms, including long-term global legacies. More broadly, “reformations,” as we conceive of this theme, is an expansive concept that can be discerned globally in diverse historic, modern, and post-modern cultural contexts and modes of expression. For example, we invite proposals that explore twentieth and twenty-first-century Pentecostal, Charismatic, and/or Catholic reformations that have shifted Christianity’s center of gravity from Europe and North America to Africa, Latin America, and Asia, while transforming beliefs, practices, and communities worldwide. We are interested in reform movements (successful or unsuccessful) that have arisen through or been impeded by interactions among Christians, as well as between Christians and other religious, spiritual, healing, scientific, and/or secular groups, practices, worldviews, or cultures. We solicit proposals that address this theme, or any other aspect of the history of Christianity and its interactions with culture, within traditional categories of historical periodization and geographical area, or across periods or regions. We also encourage proposals that engage in interdisciplinary discussion; place theological ideas and lived religious practices in historical context; examine particular genres, source materials or methods, including the use of digital humanities and non-textual sources; or treat the current state of the study of church history. Sessions that deal with pedagogical issues of concern in the teaching of the history of Christianity, or with issues in the publication and dissemination of research to specialist and general audiences are also invited. Sessions may also consider a major recent book, offer critical assessments of a distinguished career, or take the form of panel and round table discussions. The ASCH deadline is March 15, 2016. The deadline for AHA co-sponsored proposals is February 15, 2016. Information on submission is on the AHA web site. Submission Guidelines All paper/paper panel proposals should be uploaded to the ASCH website. We will consider proposals for full panels (strongly preferred) or individual papers. To submit a paper/panel proposal, one must be a member of the ASCH (or join when submitting). This requirement will be waived for scholars living and working outside the United States and for members of another AHA affiliate society (e.g. CLAH, ACHA) proposing co-sponsored sessions. E-mailasch2017@gmail.com with eligibility questions. We anticipate notifying session contacts whether their proposals have been accepted by April 30, 2016. All session participants (except those living and working outside the United States) must join the ASCH for 2017 by July 1, 2016, and all participants must register for the AHA annual meeting. Presenters/panels that fail to meet these requirements will be removed from the program. Information about ASCH membership may be found on the ASCH website. Information about conference registration will be available on the AHA website. Submission forms can be downloaded from the ASCH web site. Session proposals should include: (1) session title, (2) a description of less than 300 words outlining the theme or topic of the session, (3) a description of less than 300 words of each paper, (4) a biographical paragraph of each presenter and the chair and/or respondent, and (5) contact information for each participant, including current mailing location, e-mail address, and phone number. Please designate one individual as session contact. Panels should exhibit diversity of gender, rank, and scholarly location in their composition. Sessions will be 90 minutes in length and allow for three papers, a formal response, and Q&A. The committee reserves the right to reconfigure sessions as needed Individual paper proposals should include: (1) a description of less than 300 words, (2) a biographical paragraph of the applicant, and (3) a current mailing location, e-mail address, and phone number for the proposed presenter. Individuals may submit multiple proposals, but each person may only present one paper at the ASCH Winter Meeting (thus, if multiple paper proposals are accepted, it will be necessary to decline all but one offer); in addition to presenting a paper, an individual may also participate as chair and/or respondent in one additional session. Panels or papers requiring audio-visual equipment should provide a clear rationale for doing so, as the expense involved is considerable.
