  • Rhode Island's major drinking water supplies serve approximately 85 percent of the state's population. In partnership with RI HEALTH, the URI Cooperative Extension has assessed pollution threats to these major water supplies under the RI Source Water Assessment Program. The focus is on public drinking water "source" areas - the wellhead protection area that recharges a well or the watershed that drains to a surface water reservoir.

    • At the urging of the Commission on Sustainable Development and with the strong endorsement by the Ministerial Conference at The Hague in March 2000, the UN Administrative Committee on Coordination Subcommittee on Water Resources (UN-ACC/SCWR) has undertaken a collective UN system-wide continuing assessment process, the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP). The Programme focuses on terrestrial freshwater, but will link with the marine near-shore environments and coastal zone regions as principal sinks for land-based sources of pollution and sedimentation and as areas where the threat of flooding and the potential impact of sea level rise on freshwater resources is particularly acute. This site offers information of the programme, its goals and background, the challenges of world water problems, specific case studies, news and events, UN partners and national partners, related resources and links.

    • This Section of the document package is the Source Water Assessment Implementation Plan proposed by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD). The purpose of this "implementation plan" is to outline and describe the strategies EPD will use to satisfy the Source Water Assessment requirements for public drinking water sources. The intended audience of this plan is the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), officials, owners and operators of public water systems, and any other interested stakeholders concerned with water quality or drinking water quality. This plan was originally submitted to USEPA January 29, 1999 for approval. EPD received comments from USEPA on July 13, 1999. Changes were made to the plan to incorporate USEPA comments. This plan has been resubmitted to USEPA on March 28, 2000.
