Certain terms used in the context of HIV/AIDS may have negative connotations for those who are HIV-positive. The use of inappropriate language may also result in stigma and discrimination, thereby infringing upon individuals' rights and hindering effective HIV/AIDS prevention and care programmes.
UNAIDS strives to promote understanding and acceptance of those living with HIV/AIDS. This includes an appropriate use of language that respects the dignity and rights of all concerned, that avoids contributing to the stigmatization and rejection of those affected/infected by HIV, and that assists in creating the social changes required to overcome the epidemic.
